Context
Keleketla! is a Pedi word which is a response to the beginning of a story, something that you say back to the storyteller’s for example ‘once upon a time’. It is some kind of an acknowledgement and a consent that ‘I am here, willing to listen to your story with active participation’.
Keleketla community resource centre started in February 2008 as Keleketla! Library, it began as a once off collaboration with Bettinna Malcomess, innacitycommunity and the Joubert Park Project, with financial support by the National Arts Council. The library is a quiet space in the noise of Johannesburg that provides access to cultural resources and a forum in which to respond to them. Its aim is to begin to foster cultural literacy through encouraging personal, free engagement with books, art, music and film.
Space to dream

engaged readers
Keleketla is dedicated to growing engaged readers through the pleasure of reading, and active listening. Just like the essence of Keleketla the word, the space hopes to engage in an active dialogue with its immediate community by reflecting the inner city through participatory programmes.
The project grew to become a community arts centre that aims to provide a safe space for creativity and critical engagement with its immediate environment of Joubert Park and greater Jozi. We are developing an after school programme for youth in:
• Visual Arts [drawing, silkscreen, photography...
• Publications [zines, comics, postcards, posters, writing and poetry
• Performance [drama, dance, poetry, radio, mobile library street performance
Notable projects by other groups in collaboration with Keleketla!Library to date
• ArtBank Joburg early childhood development workshop with with Natalie Fernandes and Lapeng Welfare Crèche [27 & 28 March 2008]
• Urban Scenographies, an international public art project with invited professional artists, performers and writers from Africa and Europe. Mobile Library performance [9 & 10 March 2009]
• 2009 Khanya College Winter School and Jozi Book Fair [6, 8 & 9 August 2009]
Many more happenings, interventions and activities are well documented elsewhere on this blog.
On the horizon
We are building a community media lab that aims to
• Provide collaborative workshops in media literacy, media making and media justice
• Inform the after school programme curriculum for youth
• Inspire video, print and sound output opportunities for Johannesburg activists, community organizers and cultural practitioners
• Produce CD’s, DVD’s, websites, magazines, posters, pamphlets, fliers, t-shirts and zines
Sustainability
Keleketla does not have any funding. We explore cooperative economic models such as community bartering systems and Stokvel. For example, in 2008 artists, storytellers and other practitioners provided workshops in exchange of using our space for their own gigs, workshops and other projects. We also have space for hire, very attractive for rehearsals, workshops, performances, launches, seminars and such. Get hold of us for reasonable rates.

not your ordinary library
Thus far Keleketla has received support and a variety of donations from many organizations, collectives and individuals. Special mention to the National Arts Council, The Joubert Park Project, Frans Radebe, Exclusive Books, Pan Macmillan Publishers, Jacana Media, Likwid Tongue collective, Fananathi Movement, Eternal Beat, Imbawula Trust and many more.
We welcome proposals regarding the curriculum, sponsorships, funding and collaborative projects.
